Club Tournament
Please remember that Tuesday 27th March is the annual club tournament. There will not be a normal club night on this night so if you haven’t entered the tournament it’s probably worth staying at home with a nice hot drink; unless, of course, you want to come and watch. For those of you who have entered the tournament, please arrive at 7pm sharp so that we can start the tournament. We have 33 games to get through so it’s essential that we start on time and move quickly from one game to the next.
Paces 1 vs. Oakbrook 1
Sunday 18th March 2012
5-4
John W, Dave W | Chris R, Dave R | David P, Mark R
The same team for two matches in a row? Unheard of! A really good win for the team against league-topping Paces. It’s a very tight league with no one team able to differentiate themselves from the rest. In the end we ran out 5-4 winners with the match going down to the deciding rubber at 4-4. Amazingly, I managed not to choke (for the second time this season!) and Mark and I closed out the rubber in two ends. John and Dave again did us proud with by winning all three of their rubbers although they were pushed hard all the way. Chris and Dave I’m sure will have better nights so we’ll just chalk this one down to experience 😉
University vs. Oakbrook 1
Thursday 23rd February 2012
6-3
John W, Dave W | Chris R, Dave R | David P, Mark R
An important win for the Mens Plastics team against those young whippersnappers from the University. The match was played in a good spirit and there were lots of close games. In the end, the Walkers won all three of their rubbers, Chris and Dave won a couple and Mark and myself secured a single rubber. It was good to have the full team available again; a situation that has been all too infrequent this season. Hopefully the team can kick on from here and win a few more matches in order to secure our future in the second division.
Abbeydale Park 2 vs. Oakbrook 1
Wednesday 1st February 2012
2-7
John W, Dave W | Andrew B, Hyung-Joo L | David P, Mark R
With Dave Randall on long term injury and Chris unable to play, we were lucky enough to secure the services of Hyung-Joo and Andrew for our match against Abbeydale. The match was played in a good spirit and the final scoreline doesn’t accurately reflect how close the match really was. Mark and I took two of our rubbers to three ends and in the third rubber we lost both games narrowly (23-21 in the second). Once again, we ended up relying on the Walkers to secure points but unfortunately none of the other pairs managed to contribute.
After a good start to the season, our team has suffered a little recently and our results need to improve somewhat or we will find ourselves in a relegation battle.

Match results etc.
Just been toying with publishing the results and my up-to-date fixtures list. You can take a look at the list here. There are four different views that I use in order to get the list in various publishable formats. Hope it makes sense and that at least one person will find it useful.
Mens Plastics 1 vs. Paces
Tuesday 18th October 2011
4-5
John W, Dave W | Chris R, Simon O | David P, Mark R
Another good match was played out at home, this time against Paces. Most of the games were close with many rubbers going to a third game. Unfortunately our third pair (*blush*) didn’t manage to win any rubbers and the resulting pressure on the remaining two pairs proved a little too much as at 4-4 we lost the deciding rubber in two very close games. We need to put it behind us now and concentrate for Friday’s match which is against Phoenix where the result is always close.
Peg board
The new peg board was in operation tonight. I hope that it will serve us well for a few years at least. The peg board features the logo that I “borrowed” from Oakbrook Juniors (the same one as in the banner above) but I think it’s a good candidate for the logo on our shirts. Let me know what you think and we should be able to make progress on those shirts after all.
The season starts
The teams have been picked, the shuttles have been distributed and the season is now in full swing. We’ve had a bit of a mixed start to the season so far. Our fledgling Combined Plastics 2 team played their first fixture last week and Mens Plastics 2 got under way as well. Unfortunately, Oakbrook came second in both those fixtures. Last night was the season opener for Mens Plastics 1 and I’m pleased to announce that we had a terrific result in beating University 6-3 with each pair coming away with a 2-1 record on the night. The standard was high and the match was played in a most sporting manner. Let’s hope that this is the start of an Oakbrook resurgence for our upcoming fixtures.
Fixture lists available
The fixture lists for the 2011-2012 season are now available for download. You can download the fixtures by date or by team. You can also see the fixtures on the Calendar page. If anyone is interested in importing the fixtures in to Outlook I might be able to get some instructions together. Catch me in a good mood on club night and ask nicely 🙂
